The Wonderful Wizard of Woo

Lucky me, with Bernie Worrell after an inspiring day making music.

Lucky me, with Bernie Worrell after an inspiring day making music.

Peaceful, masterful and over-the-top generous: Bernie Worrell blew my mind in the studio. Working with a vintage Moog synth, he contributed unexpected, singular melodies to our song “Tune Out,” on the Love Me For Who I Am album, never playing the same thing twice. Listening back to the song, it still amazes me and makes me smile.  I won't forget that day.

RIP Bernie, and love and support to Judie.

Listen to "Tune Out" with Bernie Worrell here.

Bernie was the legendary keyboardist for Parliament-Funkadelic. You also might recognize his sound from his funky riffs on the the Talking Heads album Speaking in Tongues. When I was recording Tune Out, for the Love Me For Who I Am album, I heard a keyboard sound similar to what Bernie might play. The idea of him playing on the track seemed like a long shot-- but I did a little bit of exploring and to my surprise, Bernie lived about an hour away from where we were recording! I emailed; he said "cool" - and next thing I knew, I was tracking down a vintageMoog synthesizer in Northern NJ - 'cause that’s just what the man plays!

It was a beautiful, memorable day. He gave us so much music for just one song!  Exploring riff after riff, trying different tones and way-out sounds - he kind of blew our minds. He’s a sweet, peaceful person, and it was a day I remember fondly.
